When most people think of Kansas City, barbecue is the first thing that comes to mindโ€”not Mexican food. But GGโ€™s changes that narrative by blending the best of both worlds. The result? A deliciously bold fusion that just works.

Located in KCK (Kansas City, Kansas), this unassuming little spot serves some of the best food in the city. From the outside, you might never guess what culinary treasures await inside. But donโ€™t judge this place by its modest exteriorโ€”looks can be deceiving.

Itโ€™s the kind of restaurant youโ€™d drive right past unless someone tipped you off. Luckily, Travel Kansas (the stateโ€™s official tourism board) clued me in, and now Iโ€™m passing the tip along to you.

As the name suggests, GGโ€™s specializes in birriaโ€”slow-cooked, flavor-packed meat that originated in Jalisco, Mexico. Traditionally made with goat, birria in the U.S. is typically made with beef. And at GGโ€™s, youโ€™ll find it in just about everything; birria soup, birria ramen, birria chilaquiles, quesabirria tacosโ€”you name it.

Our table ordered the birria chilaquiles, birria tacos, and an enchilada casserole. Everything looked amazingโ€”but more importantly, tasted amazing!

The enchiladas here are made differently than at your typical Mexican restaurant. Instead of soft tortillas, the filling is wrapped in fried corn tortilla chips. GGโ€™s enchilada casserole comes topped with fried eggs and smothered in salsa and sour cream. Itโ€™s served with Spanish rice, refried beans, and consommรฉ. It was a lot more than Iโ€™d normally eat for breakfastโ€”but I finished every last bite!

The menu is surprisingly extensive. Youโ€™ll find everything from pancakes and tamales to brisket sandwiches, pozole, and even chicken birria. And the photo-heavy menu makes it easy to figure out what you want to order.

One standout item I highly recommend is their cafรฉ de olla, a traditional Mexican coffee brewed in a clay pot with cinnamon and cane sugar. It’s warm, rich, and the perfect way to start the day.

GGโ€™s is just a short drive off Interstate-70, making it an excellent stop if youโ€™re heading out on a drive across Northeast Kansas.

So if youโ€™re looking for a hearty breakfast or brunch spotโ€”especially one with flavor, charm, and a local secret vibeโ€”make the detour to GGโ€™s Birria Barbacoa Cafe. Even if itโ€™s a little out of your way, I promise itโ€™s worth it!
