Why visit Carpinteria?
Carpinteria is a classic California beach town, but it has a much quieter personality than some of its better-known neighbors.
Tucked between Santa Barbara and Ventura, this small coastal community is laid-back, with a palm-lined downtown, local shops and restaurants, and a beach known for its calm waters.
While Malibu to the south and Santa Barbara to the north draw plenty of attention, Carpinteria has managed to retain the charm of a small town (even though it’s somewhat of a low-key celebrity hideaway).
With its beautiful coastal setting, year-round mild weather, and unhurried pace, Carpinteria is a terrific destination for travelers looking for a relaxed California beach getaway. Whether you’re planning a romantic weekend for two, a family beach day, or a camping trip by the ocean, it’s a place where you can slow down and enjoy the simple pleasures of a coastal escape. Unwind on the sand, sip coffee downtown, breathe in the salty ocean air, or grab an ice cream and wander along the waterfront.
And while you can easily visit Carpinteria as a day trip from Los Angeles or Santa Barbara, staying a night or two gives you more time to experience the town at its best. You’ll get the beauty of the Central Coast, a more relaxed atmosphere and, in many cases, a more approachable price tag than you’ll find in some of California’s other beach towns.
Things To Do in Carpinteria
Carpinteria may be small, but there’s plenty to keep you busy for a day or two. Here are some of my favorite things to do in Carpinteria, from peaceful coastal walks and beautiful beaches to some of my favorite spots to eat and drink.
Hike the Carpinteria Bluffs Trail for epic coastline views
For some of the best coastal views in Carpinteria, head to the Carpinteria Bluffs Trail. On a clear, sunny day, the scenery is gorgeous, with sweeping views of the Pacific and the Santa Ynez Mountains seemingly dropping right into the ocean.
The trail is flat and easy, so you don’t have to consider yourself a hiker to enjoy it. It’s a relaxing way to get outside and stretch your legs while taking in some seriously beautiful scenery.
Keep an eye out for Pacific harbor seals along the way, too. A seal rookery is located on one of the beaches below the bluffs, and there’s an overlook where you can watch them lounging on the beach or swimming in the water. Visit at the right time of year and you may even spot adorable seal pups!

Take a peaceful stroll through Carpinteria Salt Marsh
The Carpinteria Salt Marsh is one of my favorite places to slow down when I’m in town, and I make a point of stopping here every time I visit Carpinteria. It’s the perfect spot to get some fresh air and take a peaceful stroll with a coffee in hand, all while enjoying stunning views of the Santa Ynez Mountains!
A flat, paved path winds through the marsh, making this an easy walk and a great option for getting outside and enjoying the scenery.
It’s also one of the best spots in Carpinteria for bird watching. Keep an eye out for great egrets and other waterfowl among the wetlands, and be sure to look into the water for schools of fish moving through the marsh. The estuary serves as an important nursery habitat for halibut, making this peaceful landscape an important part of the local ecosystem.

Sip coffee and enjoy fresh-baked treats at Brassbird Cafe
If you ask me, no visit to Carpinteria is complete without a stop at Brassbird Cafe. It’s my favorite cafe of all time, and I always make time for coffee and something sweet here. My go-to is the honey lavender latte, which is absolutely heavenly, but there are other delicious options to choose from including their refreshing mint iced coffee (my other go-to drink here).
Everything is baked fresh on site, so don’t leave without trying one of their baked treats. Their muffins, cheesecakes, and croissants are all delicious, and if you’re looking for something more substantial, their ham, cheese, and béchamel croissant is a favorite of mine.
Brassbird is incredibly popular, so expect it to be busy, especially during peak morning hours. The good news is that they’re open until 3 p.m. giving you plenty of time to stop by later in the morning or around lunchtime. There’s plenty of outdoor seating, and in winter, their fire pits make it an especially cozy place to enjoy your coffee.
Treat yourself to Rori’s Artisanal Ice Cream
If you love ice cream, make sure Rori’s Artisanal Creamery is on your Carpinteria itinerary. This is easily one of my favorite ice cream shops in the L.A. and Ventura County area!
What sets Rori’s apart is just how intensely the flavors come through. Their ice cream genuinely tastes like what it’s supposed to taste like. You don’t just get a hint of lavender, lemon, or pistachio… you can actually taste it! And with both classic and seasonal flavors, there’s always something tempting to try here.
The regular lineup includes creative flavors like Black Pepper Pistachio, Honey Lavender, and Lemon Curd, while seasonal flavors are where things can get especially interesting. Think Matcha Green Tea topped with strawberry boba (sounds intriguing right?). Their Decadent Chocolate flavor is in my opinion a standout. It’s made with 72% Belgian dark chocolate and French dark cocoa creating an intense chocolate flavor.
One of the reasons I never feel bad about stopping here is that they use milk and cream sourced locally from a California Central Coast dairy, from grass-fed Jersey and Holstein cows, with no hormones or antibiotics. And if you’re like me and hate to leave your dog out of the fun while traveling, you’ll be happy to know that Rori’s is dog-friendly, too. They make frozen peanut butter pup cups that my pup absolutely loves. Just look at the photo of my boy thoroughly enjoying his!
Spend a day at Carpinteria Beach
A visit to Carpinteria isn’t complete without spending some time at the beach! Carpinteria Beach is famous for its unusually calm waters, so much so that the city even has a mural celebrating the fact.
It’s a popular spot for families, and on a warm summer day, you’ll find people swimming, sunbathing, and simply relaxing on the sand. Bring a towel or beach chair and just settle in for the day, or take a leisurely stroll along the shoreline.
This beach is also dog-friendly, making it a great place to enjoy some time outside with your four-legged travel companion.
Just keep in mind Carpinteria Beach is super busy on summer weekends and finding parking can be tough, so arriving early is a good idea.
Pro tip: Don’t overlook Carpinteria Beach in the winter. When the marine layer rolls in and blankets the shoreline in fog, the beach takes on an almost ethereal atmosphere. It’s a completely different experience from a sunny summer afternoon, but just as beautiful.
Sample mead at Apiary
Never tried mead before? Neither had I! This is your chance to sample it at Apiary, a local business where honey mead is the star of the taproom. Mead is essentially an alcoholic drink made by fermenting honey, and Apiary has a variety of flavors to try, making it a fun stop especially if you’re completely new to it.
Not sure which one you’ll like? Order a flight and sample several before committing to a full pour. And if mead turns out not to be your thing, Apiary also serves hard kombucha and cider.
Where I recommend staying in Carpinteria
I live close enough to Carpinteria that I usually visit as a day trip, so I haven’t actually stayed overnight here yet. But if I were booking a hotel in Carpinteria, the Best Western Plus Carpinteria Inn is where I’d choose to stay.
I’ve driven past this hotel countless times, and the beautiful Spanish-style building, red-tile roofs, and lush courtyard always catch my eye. I’m also a fan of the Best Western Plus brand, so this one has been on my own “someday” list for a while.
It has a heated outdoor pool and is conveniently located just off Highway 101, making it easy to explore Carpinteria and hop on the freeway for a day trip to Santa Barbara.
It’s also close enough to downtown that you can leave the car behind and walk to local restaurants, cafes, and shops. So while I can’t personally vouch for the rooms, the location, Spanish-style architecture, and amenities make this the hotel I’d pick for a stay in Carpinteria.
