GGโs Birria Barbacoa Cafe is a true hidden gem in Kansas City. This hole-in-the-wall eatery absolutely deserves a spot on your Kansas City food bucket list!

When most people think of Kansas City, barbecue is the first thing that comes to mindโnot Mexican food. But GGโs changes that narrative by blending the best of both worlds. The result? A deliciously bold fusion that just works.
Located in KCK (Kansas City, Kansas), this unassuming little spot serves some of the best food in the city. From the outside, you might never guess what culinary treasures await inside. But donโt judge this place by its modest exteriorโlooks can be deceiving.
Itโs the kind of restaurant youโd drive right past unless someone tipped you off. Luckily, Travel Kansas (the stateโs official tourism board) clued me in, and now Iโm passing the tip along to you.

As the name suggests, GGโs specializes in birriaโslow-cooked, flavor-packed meat that originated in Jalisco, Mexico. Traditionally made with goat, birria in the U.S. is typically made with beef. And at GGโs, youโll find it in just about everything; birria soup, birria ramen, birria chilaquiles, quesabirria tacosโyou name it.
Our table ordered the birria chilaquiles, birria tacos, and an enchilada casserole. Everything looked amazingโbut more importantly, tasted amazing!
The enchiladas here are made differently than at your typical Mexican restaurant. Instead of soft tortillas, the filling is wrapped in fried corn tortilla chips. GGโs enchilada casserole comes topped with fried eggs and smothered in salsa and sour cream. Itโs served with Spanish rice, refried beans, and consommรฉ. It was a lot more than Iโd normally eat for breakfastโbut I finished every last bite!

The menu is surprisingly extensive. Youโll find everything from pancakes and tamales to brisket sandwiches, pozole, and even chicken birria. And the photo-heavy menu makes it easy to figure out what you want to order.
One standout item I highly recommend is their cafรฉ de olla, a traditional Mexican coffee brewed in a clay pot with cinnamon and cane sugar. It’s warm, rich, and the perfect way to start the day.
GGโs is just a short drive off Interstate-70, making it an excellent stop if youโre heading out on a drive across Northeast Kansas.
So if youโre looking for a hearty breakfast or brunch spotโespecially one with flavor, charm, and a local secret vibeโmake the detour to GGโs Birria Barbacoa Cafe. Even if itโs a little out of your way, I promise itโs worth it!
