When people think about Kansas City, BBQ is usually the first thing that comes to mind. Definitely not Mexican food. But at GG’s, they have come up with the brilliant idea of combining the two flavors. And it’s a winning combination.

Located in KCK (Kansas City, Kansas), this unassuming restaurant is home to some of the best food in the city. From the shop’s exterior you would think surely this place doesn’t have amazing food, but I assure you it does. So don’t judge this restaurant by its exterior because looks can be deceiving.

It’s a true hole in the wall restaurant that you likely wouldn’t pay any attention to unless someone had told you to. Fortunately, Travel Kansas (the official tourism board for the state) clued me in on how terrific this place is. And I’m here to let you in on that secret.

As the name suggests, GG’s specializes in birria. You can get birria soup, birria ramen, birria chilaquiles, quesabirria tacos, and so much more.

Birria is a Mexican dish that originates from Jalisco. In Mexico it is generally made with goat meat but in the United States birria usually describes slow-cooked beef.

My table ordered the birria chilaquiles, birria tacos, and I got enchiladas casserole. All of it looked amazing, but more importantly tasted amazing!

The enchiladas are made differently here than at other Mexican restaurants. Instead of using wheat tortillas, the filling is wrapped inside fried tortilla corn chips. At GG’s, the enchilada casserole comes topped with fried eggs and is then smothered in salsa and sour cream. It comes with a side serving of Spanish rice, refried beans, and consommé.

It was more than what I would usually eat for breakfast, but it was so good I made sure to finish all of it!

GG’s has an extensive menu that includes pancakes, tamales, brisket sandwiches, pozole, and even chicken birria. They have pictures of all the dishes on the menu which is really helpful in deciding what to order.

I highly recommend trying their Café de olla which is a Mexican style coffee. The coffee is brewed in a clay pot called an olla with cane sugar and cinnamon.

Even though it was a much bigger breakfast than I would typically have, it was a great place to start my Kansas road trip.

GG’s is not too far from Interstate-70 so if you’re just beginning a road trip across the great state of Kansas, this is a good place to start your day.

If you’re looking for a place to have a hearty breakfast or brunch, do yourself a favor and head to GG’s Birria Cafe, even if it is out of your way. I promise you won’t regret it.
