We stumbled upon Hungry Al’s BBQ during a day trip to Pine Mountain Club. Its fire-engine red exterior and somewhat lonely location off the freeway immediately caught our eye. Curiosity got the better of us so we decided to give it a shot!

One thing that stood out was the friendly staff who made us feel welcome the moment we walked in, from the guy manning the smoker out front to the waitress who took our order.

Inside, the restaurant has a fun, quirky vibe. A giant truck tire is built into the front counter, and the walls are decorated with all kinds of offbeat touches.

Even though it was a warm day, we decided to sit outside and enjoy the mountain views—we also didn’t want to leave our mini poodle in the truck by himself in such high temperatures.

Hungry Al’s smokes tri-tip, pork ribs, pulled pork, and hot links, which you can order in a combo that comes served with two sides plus a dinner roll. The sides include bbq beans, potato salad, coleslaw, and mac & cheese. Otherwise you can order your meat on a sandwich which comes with one side.

We tried the loaded tri-tip mac & cheese—a rich, indulgent dish served in a hearty portion (though there could’ve been a bit more mac for the price). The tri-tip was tender, flavorful, and cooked to perfection, easily the highlight of the meal.

While the menu here leans on the pricier side, it’s a satisfying splurge if you’re craving something more memorable than your typical freeway fast food.

You’ll find cutlery and napkins already on the tables, and there’s even bar-style seating at the counter—though just a heads-up, they only serve bottled beer (no taps).
