Tour the Tallest Capitol Building in the U.S.—Yes, It’s in Kansas!
Discover one of Kansas’s coolest hidden gems—a free tour of the tallest state capitol building in the U.S. Climb to the top of the dome for panoramic views and an unforgettable Topeka adventure!

Did you know Kansas is home to the tallest capitol building in the United States? Standing at 306 feet, the Kansas State Capitol in Topeka is 17 feet taller than the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.—and it’s the only state capitol in America where visitors can climb all the way to the top of the dome!
Yes, you can actually climb to the top on a free, guided Dome Tour. Whether you’re a history buff, architecture lover, or a thrill-seeker with a head for heights, the Kansas State Capitol Dome Tour is a Kansas bucket-list experience not to miss.
Inside the Kansas State Capitol Dome Tour: What it’s like to climb to the top
The Dome Tour begins on the fifth floor of the capitol. From there, a guided journey takes you up 296 stairs—roughly the equivalent of a 10-story building. Along the way, your guide will share insights into the building’s design and history.
The most fascinating part? The Kansas State Capitol has not one, but two domes: an inner dome visible from the rotunda, and the outer dome visible from the outside. On the tour, you’ll climb into the space between these domes to see the inner workings of this incredible structure.

As you ascend, you’ll notice graffiti from decades past when visitors were once allowed to explore the dome without supervision. Today, guided tours ensure safety—especially helpful as you near the final stretch.
That final stretch? It’s not for the faint of heart. A narrow spiral staircase—more like a ladder—leads to the top, suspended just below the cupola. This is usually where visitors with a fear of heights decide they’ve gone far enough.

If you’re brave enough to make the final push, you’ll step outside onto a narrow balcony at the very top of the dome. Here, you’ll officially be at the highest point in Topeka, with panoramic views in every direction—and a close-up look at Ad Astra. It’s easily one of the coolest and most unexpected experiences you can have in Kansas.

Don’t worry if you’re nervous about heights. You’re welcome to climb as far as you feel comfortable. Even if you don’t make it all the way to the top, the views from the mid-levels and the architectural details along the way are absolutely worth it. So take the tour!
