Property Highlights
The Location: El Paso, Texas
El Paso sits along the U.S.–Mexico border in far West Texas, where desert landscapes, mountain backdrops, and a rich blend of cultures shape the city’s identity. Overlooking Ciudad Juárez just across the Rio Grande, El Paso feels distinctly different from other Texas destinations, with strong Mexican influence woven into its architecture, cuisine, language, and daily life.
For West Coast travelers (especially those based in Los Angeles and San Diego), El Paso is surprisingly accessible. It’s roughly a 10-hour drive from LA, making it a road trip friendly destination or a compelling stop on a longer Southwest itinerary for anyone based in Southern California.
Once you arrive, you’ll quickly discover one of the city’s biggest draws—the food. El Paso is known for its bold, flavorful Mex-American fusion cuisine, from classic border-style enchiladas to elevated modern interpretations that reflect generations of culinary crossover.
The city also serves as an excellent jumping-off point for exploring two of Texas’s most remarkable national parks — Big Bend National Park and Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Whether you’re planning desert hikes, scenic drives, or a full West Texas adventure, staying in El Paso provides a comfortable and culturally rich base before heading deeper into the state’s wide-open landscapes.

This property is also a great fit for visitors who appreciate spacious accommodations and upscale amenities. What You’ll Love ❤️

One of the first things you’ll notice at Hotel Paso Del Norte is just how incredibly spacious the rooms are. Compared to many modern hotels, the accommodations feel almost oversized, giving you plenty of room to spread out and truly relax after a day of exploring.
The interiors balance comfort with character, featuring charming Southwest-inspired touches from locally inspired artwork to decorative accents that give the rooms a strong sense of place without feeling overdone.
The rooftop experience is another standout. It overlooks downtown and offers sweeping views that stretch across the border into Ciudad Juárez, creating a uniquely memorable setting you won’t find at most city hotels.
At sunset, guests gather at El Mirador Rooftop Bar, where comfortable seating and panoramic vistas make it one of the best spots in the city to unwind with a drink while watching the sky change colors over the desert landscape.
Back downstairs, the atmosphere shifts from scenic to spectacular at The Dome Bar. The bar’s iconic stained-glass dome ceiling immediately draws your attention, adding a sense of historic grandeur that elevates any evening out, whether you’re stopping in for a cocktail or simply soaking in the ambiance of this beautifully restored space.
Location is another major highlight. Situated within walking distance of downtown’s main square, top attractions, and some of the city’s best restaurants, staying at this hotel makes it easy to explore without relying on transport.
Even better, you don’t have to leave the property to eat well. You’ll have access to a convenient café, an upscale steakhouse, and one of the city’s top-rated elevated Mexican dining experiences, making the hotel feel like a complete destination in itself.
My experience staying at Hotel Paso Del Norte in El Paso, Texas.
I’ll be honest, I chose to stay at Hotel Paso Del Norte knowing it was one of the more expensive hotels in El Paso. Part of it was wanting to treat myself. But the bigger reason was location.

Since I was traveling solo, I wanted to be right in the heart of downtown so I wouldn’t have to walk long distances alone at night or constantly call Ubers. In that sense, the higher nightly rate actually balanced out. I was able to walk to museums, restaurants, and the downtown square with ease.
As luck would have it, I happened to be visiting during Day of the Dead celebrations. The downtown square was completely transformed with string lights glowing in the trees, food vendors lining the sidewalks, music playing, and families gathering to celebrate. Staying right in the center of it all made the experience feel more immersive.

Check-in set the tone for the stay. I was offered a glass of champagne, which immediately made the splurge feel justified. When I got up to my room, I was genuinely impressed by how spacious it was.
The room felt oversized compared to most modern hotels, with plenty of room to spread out. Behind the bed was artwork inspired by El Paso’s geography and maps — a subtle design touch that rooted the space in its surroundings.
If I had to mention one small disappointment, it would be that my window was quite dirty, which made it difficult to fully enjoy the view from inside the room. That said, I do understand the challenge — this is a historic property, and cleaning exterior windows on higher floors can’t be easy. Fortunately, it wasn’t a major issue because the hotel’s large rooftop on the 10th floor more than made up for it.
The rooftop at Hotel Paso Del Norte
I headed up to explore the rooftop almost immediately. The pool area was calm and surprisingly quiet, overlooking the downtown square below. There’s a separate bar space, El Mirador Rooftop Bar, where you can sit indoors with air conditioning or head outside onto the patio.
The views stretch across the border into Ciudad Juárez, and at sunset the mountains glow while city lights begin to twinkle. It’s the kind of vantage point that really helps you understand the lay of the land in this unique border city.
Back downstairs, I made sure to visit The Dome Bar and it truly is impressive. The 25-foot Tiffany-style stained glass dome ceiling is stunning, especially during the daytime when natural light filters through the glass. In the evening, the atmosphere shifts with live entertainment and a more intimate glow. It’s worth seeing at least once in daylight to fully appreciate the craftsmanship.
For quick bites and caffeine, the onsite café, Dulce, was incredibly convenient. I grabbed coffee there in the mornings (though Starbucks is directly across the street if that’s more your thing). They offer a solid selection of pastries like scones, muffins, and croissants, plus fresh salads, sandwiches, and even creamy house-made gelato.

The hotel also has two full-service restaurants — the elegant 1700° steakhouse and Sabor. I didn’t dine at the steakhouse since I was traveling solo, but it looked ideal for a romantic evening or celebratory dinner.
I did have dinner at Sabor, and it was fantastic. I’d describe it as upscale Mexican cuisine with surprisingly reasonable prices. The restaurant was packed during both lunch and dinner service while I was there. I ended up eating fairly late (after 9 p.m.) because the museums were open late for Day of the Dead festivities.
I had considered other restaurants while I was out exploring, but most had long waits, so I was grateful Sabor stays open late. My server was friendly, the ambiance felt lively yet refined, and while my food took a bit longer than expected (even though the dining room had quieted down), I didn’t mind. I ordered the short rib enchiladas followed by churros for dessert, and everything was genuinely impressive.

All things considered, I can see why this property is one of the best in the city. Yes, the nightly rate is on the higher side for El Paso, but when you factor in the free airport shuttle (they even sent a driver just for me), the walkable location, and the convenience of having multiple dining options onsite, it begins to make sense. I saved money on rideshares, saved time commuting, and felt completely comfortable returning to the hotel after dark.
It’s super easy to grab breakfast, head out to explore the Franklin Mountains, or pick up your rental car for a West Texas road trip, then return for sunset views from above. For me, that rooftop perspective, looking out over downtown and across the border, was definitely the highlight.

While The Plaza Hotel Pioneer Park just across the street is a strong rival with a similar level of luxury, Hotel Paso Del Norte stands out for its rooftop pool and grand historic atmosphere. For a centrally located, upscale base in El Paso, this place is hard to beat!
Final Thoughts: Is Hotel Paso Del Norte right for you?
When it comes to luxury stays in El Paso, Hotel Paso Del Norte firmly holds its place at the top (alongside its strong rival The Plaza Hotel Pioneer Park which carries its own historic prestige including the notable detail that Elizabeth Taylor once lived there).
Because of that, I would highly recommend narrowing your choice to these two properties if you’re looking for the best hotel in the city.
That said, Hotel Paso Del Norte stands out for its spacious rooms, rooftop pool, and dramatic Dome Bar. Whether you’re planning a weekend escape, a romantic getaway, or simply want an upscale home base while exploring West Texas, this landmark hotel delivers both atmosphere and convenience.
From sunset cocktails overlooking the border to walkable access to El Paso’s best attractions and restaurants, a stay here turns a simple city visit into something more memorable. If you’re a first-time visitor to El Paso and want to explore a new city without worrying about logistics, safety, or transportation, this is an ideal base.
