7 Fun Things To Do In Chickasha, Oklahoma

Chickasha is a small town in Oklahoma best known for its enormous leg lamp sculpture but there are other fun things to do in Chickasha. The community of Chickasha was established in 1892 therefore has several historic places of interest to explore.

Chickasha is a historic town in south-central Oklahoma. This small community’s downtown area is lined with buildings that date back to the early twentieth century. Several locations that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places are worth seeing including the Grady County Courthouse, New Hope Baptist Church and the US Post Office and Federal Courthouse.

The Chisholm Trail, a trail used to drive cattle from Texas to Kansas, once passed through Chickasha. If you’re interested in western history and would like to learn more about this historic trail, be sure to plan a visit to the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center in Duncan.

Fun Things To Do In Chickasha

1. Pay homage to a giant Leg Lamp

The most popular attraction in Chickasha is the 50-foot tall sculpture of a leg lamp based on the 1983 holiday film “A Christmas Story”. The larger-than-life leg lamp stands atop a gigantic wooden crate marked fragile.

This quirky roadside attraction is really cool to see in person and in my opinion deserves a spot on every travelers Oklahoma bucket list! It alone is worth visiting Chickasha!!

In fact, many people from all over Oklahoma and even Texas will drive several hours just to come and see the leg lamp and take photos with it. It is certainly a fun photo opportunity for all ages. At night, the leg lamp not only lights up, but the lights change color too.

You’ll find the leg lamp in the historic downtown area at the very end of Chickasha Avenue adjacent to Rock Island Depot.

2. Get your photo taken in front of the Chickasha mural

If you’re looking for more fun photo opportunities to add to your travels, be sure to find the Chickasha mural. The brightly-painted wall (or rather fence) makes a great backdrop for Instagram-worthy pictures.

This mural is fairly new and therefore not listed on Google Maps yet but you can find it on the corner of Chickasha Avenue and 6th Street in downtown Chickasha.

3. Pop into Tammie’s Bling

Ladies, if you love to shop for bright, funky and unique pieces, take yourself to Tammie’s Bling. This boutique store sells all sorts of one-of-a-kind finds including jeans, denim shorts, handbags, and some very blingy shoes. There’s also a great selection of tees to choose from.

Most of the items here do have a little bit of western flair so if that’s what you’re into you will love this shop! You’ll find suede skirts, fringed jackets, leopard print pants and more.

4. Familiarize yourself with the history of Grady County

The Grady County Museum focuses on history within Grady County and includes artifacts from First Americans and early pioneers who settled in the northwest corner of the Chickasaw Nation.

There are also exhibits on the Rock Island Depot, a barn and homestead house, paintings, and a vast collection of photographs dating back to 1895 that document the development of Grady County. 

The museum is located inside an old department store that was constructed in 1907. It was renovated to house the museum and various vendor spaces. Opening hours are between 10am and 3pm from Tuesday to Friday.

5. Sample local brew at Canadian River Brewing

Canadian River Brewing is a brewery that is sure to please every type of beer drinker. They offer a variety of different beers from pilsners to blonde ales, imperial stouts, saisons, and of course IPAs.

All of the water sourced for making the beers here come from a rural underground aquifer which helps to create a better tasting beer profile. Additionally, the grains used are always sourced from the country of origin when making German and Belgain styles of beer.

I tried a Mexican-style, spicy stout that was very delicious. No promises it will be there when you go since what’s on offer changes seasonally. But you are welcome to ask for a taster before you commit to a pint.

6. Visit Muscle Car Ranch

Muscle Car Ranch is set on an old dairy farm and holds a huge collection of old muscle cars and bikes, auto-related artwork, as well as oil and gas memoribilia. Some of the vehicles here are rare and date back to the 1950s. There is also a neon and porcelain sign museum on the property.

The local attraction also doubles as an RV park so if you’re looking for somewhere to stay in your camper be sure to look this business up! The owner of the property hosts annual events such as music festivals and car meet ups. You can find more information on their facebook page.

7. Attend the annual Chickasha Festival of Lights

If you’re visiting Chickasha during the Christmas holidays, be sure to attend the annual Chickasha Festival of Lights. It is recognized as one of the top holiday light shows in Oklahoma!

The festival features an impressive Christmas light display that visitors can walk or drive through in Shannon Springs Park. At the center of the park is a beautiful 172-foot Christmas tree that can be seen from miles around.

Besides seeing the spectacular Christmas light display, you can also enjoy ice skating, carriage rides, and camel rides. Other attractions include a ferris wheel, a carousel, and santa photos.

Grab yourself a hot chocolate and a cinnamon roll, and take a stroll through the park. It will absolutely feel as though you are in a Hallmark movie!

Dates for this year are November 18th through December 31st, 2023. They are even open on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve. Admission is free!
