One of the easiest and most scenic options is the Satwiwa Loop Trail, a short 1.6-mile loop that leads hikers across a beautiful grassy field set beneath the breathtaking backdrop of Boney Mountain.
The name “Satwiwa” comes from the Chumash word for “the bluffs.” The Chumash people lived in this area for thousands of years, and Satwiwa was the name of a village that once stood here.
Along the trail, you’ll see a traditional Chumash dwelling and can visit a small cultural center at the trailhead, which offers insights into the lives and history of the Chumash people.
Best time to hike Satwiwa Loop Trail
The Satwiwa Loop Trail is beautiful to hike at any time of year, thanks to Southern California’s mild climate. In spring and early summer, the grassy fields are vibrant and green, while fall brings cooler temperatures and crisp, clear mountain views.
During the cooler months, low-lying clouds, fog, and mist often shroud the Santa Monica Mountains, creating an ethereal atmosphere across the park.
How to hike the Satwiwa Loop Trail
From the parking lot, set off down a flat, sandy path. As you walk, the Santa Monica Mountains will come into view in the distance. At the end of the sandy trail, you’ll reach a junction where you can either turn left or continue straight on a paved road. Turn left here to begin hiking the Satwiwa Loop Trail.

The first landmark you’ll encounter is the Satwiwa Native American Indian Culture Center. The center is only open on weekends, so if you’d like to explore the museum, plan your hike for a Saturday or Sunday.
Continue along the Satwiwa Loop Trail a little farther and you’ll come across a replica of a traditional Chumash home. Feel free to step inside and take a closer look!

Look up and you’ll spot the prominent Boney Peak, rising 2,825 feet—one of the highest summits in the range. (If you’re up for a bigger adventure, there’s also a trail from Rancho Sierra Vista that leads all the way to Boney Peak.)

As you continue, the trail begins to gently climb over low hills. Don’t worry—the elevation gain is mild and manageable. From the higher vantage points, you’ll enjoy sweeping views over Newbury Park.
