How to hike the Devils Orchard Nature Trail
The Devils Orchard Nature Trail begins at the parking area, where an interpretive sign details the dramatic forces that shaped this strange and rugged terrain.
From here, a paved pathway winds through a moon-like landscape, surrounded by jagged lava flows, scattered volcanic rock fragments, and twisted, gnarled trees.
This area, known as Devils Orchard, was formed around 2,000 years ago, when massive chunks of a crater wall were carried downstream by lava flows, eventually coming to rest in this very spot.
Over time, the crater walls crumbled, creating rich volcanic soil that allowed hardy plants like rabbitbrush and limber pines to take root in what appears to be an otherwise barren wasteland. Today, this โlava gardenโ is a beautiful yet haunting testament to the power of volcanic activity and the resilience of life.
Walking through Devils Orchard feels like stepping onto another planet. The jagged black lava, punctuated by bursts of unexpected greenery, creates a stunning contrast that makes this one of the most unique hikes in Idaho.
Despite visiting in late Julyโthe park’s peak periodโwe found the trail to be quiet and lightly trafficked. Itโs likely that many visitors opt to stay in their cars during the hottest part of the day, but we highly recommend stepping out and immersing yourself in this fascinating environment. It’s a once in a lifetime experience!
If youโre looking for a quick, easy, and family-friendly hike, Devils Orchard Nature Trail is a perfect choice. It provides an up-close look at Craters of the Moonโs volcanic terrain, making it an essential stop along the parkโs 7 Mile Loop Road.
